Frequently asked questions ...

I have been receiving quite a lot of questions from friends and followers on my blog again, so I thought I would resurrect my 'Frequently asked questions' series in order to answer some of them.

Today I am going to answer:

"What printer do you use?"

I use a Canon PIXMA MG5450 printer, I would say it is a mid range and retails at about £60.   I chose this one because it uses separate ink cartridges, I think this is better when you are printing lots of coloured pages - you always end up using more of one colour than others.

I always use genuine Canon ink, it is quick and easy to change the ink cartridges with no mess at all.   I tend to buy in bulk when I see a good price somewhere, our local Tesco quite often have BOGOF offers and Amazon can be very reasonable.

My printer will feed 300gsm card stock without any problems, I think I have probably used even thicker on occasion.  It will also feed cut out shapes like card blanks and die cuts - I just attach them to a piece of copy paper with some double sided tape and carefully peel them off when they have printed.  If there is a problem and I get a paper jam, it is really easy to just remove a panel at the back of the printer and remove the offending item.

I think that the paper you use is more important than the printer though and would recommend that you check out my blog post HERE  where I answer the question "What paper do you use for printing?"

I hope you find this information useful and that I have managed to answer some of the questions that I have received. I would just like to say that I am NOT recommending these products, I am only letting you know what I use.

  2. I too have a Canon Pixma printer - MG 5550. I use Canon ink cartridges and buy mine online from Cartridge People. They sell the XL size cartridges and also a saver pack with all the colours. I also go through TopCashBack and get money back from my order.

  5. Great info Pauline, can you tell me? does it do custom sizes? I have an HP, which does custom sizes, but I can't print more than 225grm card on it. I think a lot of us crafters would like a machine that does at least 300grm and custom sizes, the companies would do great business with us LOL.

  6. Hi Pauline. I too have a Canon Pixma printer but it isn't made anymore and it feeds any type of paper/card that I put into it (even 350gsm). It's a rear feed and Canon seem to be stopping production of them. We've got an expensive rear feed Epson at work but it won't take even 200gsm card and jams. I use Stinky Ink (online) to buy my inks, which are compatibles, and I did a test with the genuines but could hardly see any difference. If all us crafters wrote to Canon, they might start making more rear feed crafting printers!!!

    1. Oh no I hope they don't stop producing rear feed as paper / card goes through printers much better that are rear feed and I do love my Canon printers.

  9. I have a Cannon printer, my second and would recommend them, the ink lasts a long time and is a bit cheaper than some. I always use proper cannon ink.

  10. Hi Pauline, I have this printer too!!! I really love it. It takes my 300gsm card ok and prints beautifully on photo paper too. It's economical with the ink, so a great all rounder for crafty projects.

  12. Very useful post Pauline, I have a HP printer which is great but it doesn't take card so have been thinking of changing it. Canon does seem a popular choice so I'll refer back to this when I get one.

    1. Canon's are excellent printers and seems very popular with crafter's as they will take the heavier card. I too have a Canon and would highly recommend one to anyone, the print quality is fantastic providing your using a good quality card stock whether using originals inks or compatibles.
